Living with Celiac Disease can feel like maneuvering through a minefield. One moment, you're feeling well, and the next, you're dealing with a surge of symptoms that can leave you exhausted and frustrated. For me, the journey has involved discovering methods to handle not only the physical symptoms but also the mental impact of having an autoimmune disorder.
When I first found out about my diagnosis, I felt pretty lost. Dealing with the physical symptoms was frustrating, but the mental stress of always worrying about what I could eat and how my body might react was just too much. On tough days, my yoga practice has been a real lifesaver.
When I step onto my mat, particularly on days when my physical practice is painful, I concentrate on mindfulness and meditation. These aspects have aided me in developing calmness and mental clarity. They enable me to set aside concerns about my health, frustrations over my physical limitations, and the stress of not knowing when I'll feel better. During the 20 to 60 minutes I'm on my mat, it's all about letting go, living in the moment, and appreciating what my mind and body are doing right then.
The breathing techniques I’ve learned have proven especially useful. For instance, when I feel anxiety creeping in, I can use diaphragmatic breathing to ground myself. This simple act has helped shift my mindset, allowing me to regain control over my thoughts and emotions.
An excellent part of being in a studio environment is the sense of community. Practicing with others helps me remember that everyone is managing something with their body. It reminds me that it's a yoga practice, not a yoga perfect.
For me, restorative yoga has been a game-changer. Its slower pace allows me to concentrate on my breath and listen to my body without the pressure of pushing myself too hard. This style is particularly beneficial on days when my symptoms flare up. When I'm in good spirits and free from pain and fatigue, I relish a vinyasa session or, preferably, a slow flow (heated if possible). It's all about respecting what my body and mind require on that particular day.
The beauty of yoga is that it doesn’t have to be confined to the studio. I’ve incorporated yoga into my daily life, even on days when I’m not feeling my best. Simple stretches in the morning can energize me and set a positive tone for the day. I also take moments throughout the day to breathe deeply and center myself. Even when fatigue sets in, a few gentle poses can help rejuvenate both my body and mind. It’s all about tuning into my body’s needs and honoring them.
Living with Celiac Disease and chronic pain is undeniably challenging, but yoga has provided me with tools to navigate both the physical and emotional aspects of my journey. Through consistent practice, I’ve discovered a deeper understanding of my body. Yoga has taught me to be more mindful and present, significantly enhancing my overall well-being.
Remember, every journey is unique, so it’s important to find what works best for you. Whether through yoga, meditation, or other forms of self-care, prioritizing your health and well-being is essential. You deserve it!
